Free Water Videos

Vancouver Island videographer, Paul Manly, has made two of his excellent documentaries on water available on online.

Voices of the River is a 46 minute film which explores the historic and contemporary uses and values of the Nanaimo River watershed. It is the main source of drinking water for the city of Nanaimo. It is one of the most important ecological features of the mid island region comprising over 800 square kilometers and providing habitat to a wide range of wildlife including rare and endangered species. It is culturally and spiritually significant to the Snuneymuxw people. It is important for the fishing, forestry and tourism industries and it provides a wide range of recreational opportunities for local residents.

Troubled Water examines the threats to public water systems and watersheds using the East Coast of Vancouver Island as a case study. Privatization, public private partnerships (P3’s or P4’s Public Pays for Private Profits), privately owned community watersheds, vulnerable aquifers, over-development, ground water contamination and international trade agreements all undermine the safety and security of public water systems, public ownership and the fundamental human right to access clean drinking water.
